A model to create "effective" conservation awareness projects

Conversation Conservation (C.C) is an initiative to bring together the fields of communication design and conservation science. Designers need to focus on relevant content and wildlife conservationists should understand the importance of good design.

Website as portal

The website serves as a portal for the two fields to collaborate. Every month, an organization approaches C.C. to meet up with a group visual designers. They conceptualize a design brief that is sure to not turn into “just another panda campaign”. This in turn will lead to creating several successful wildlife campaigns.

Inspiration

It was inspired by the model Cafe Scientifique that makes science more accessible to the general public.

Monthly meets/ projects

Physical meet ups for the same will be organized each month,

for a different individual or organization and a group visual communicators. The project outcomes will be intended to stress

on ongoing wildlife related issues in Singapore to educate the public and follow ups will be done to make them into long term holistic campaigns. See what we have already done!

What is Conversation Conservation?
Who started Conversation Conservation?

Student: Design communication
And an
aspiring conservationist

This project is the vision of the final year student (2013) Radhika Gupta, of Design Communication at Lasalle College

of the Arts, Singapore. She is greatly involved in wildlife conservation and invests her free time in learning about the environment through books, online articles and visits to nature reserves in Singapore and the National Parks in India.

Challenge

Radhika wanted to balance her interest and passion for both visual design and conservation and was looking for a middle path. She was working to find out, through her thesis, what is it that makes people attracted to or repulsed by awareness campaigns and how design played a major role in it.

Mediator

She saw herself in a good position to understand the views of both designers and conservationists and realized that she could act as a mediator for the two streams of professions.

What happens when art and science meets? Scientists perform their P.h.D. research to reach out to people who do not understand complex science papers or also for other scientists to understand their work better. What's better? They even made it into a yearly contest!

Scientists "perform" P.h.D.

A storytelling platform for scientists to tell their stories in any way that they like. You may find some interesting comic strips. See what the science nerds have got to say about their lab work, work on field and experiences with people who do not understand their research one bit!

Stories from scientists

Check out this super effective platform that brings Science to people by speaking to scientists online and on radio. The design team has done a great visual and communication job with the website and has been a great inspiration for us!
